NAME/S
Cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus libani or Cedrus libanotica)
SUB NAMES/S
No sub species of Cedar of Lebanon are listed though other named species, Cedrus deodara (Deodar originating in India) and Cedrus atlantica (Atlas Cedar originating in North Africa) produce substantially similar timber.
TRADE NAME/S
Highly figured examples may carry descriptive names.
ORIGIN
Cedar of Lebanon originates in the Middle East though much of the timber now available comes from trees that are successfully grown in many parts of the world including Europe and North America.
APPEARANCE
The wood viewed overall is gold/brown though the colouration varies between pale and dark due to the very marked difference in colour within the growth rings between the early and the late wood.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES
The cedrus species produce a soft timber of average density 580 kg/m3 . It is regarded as brittle and having little strength though Deodar is said to be equivalent to European Redwood in this respect and is usually of straighter grain due to its pyramidal growth habit.
AVAILABILITY
The solid material can be obtained but probably in small quantity. It is not contained in the TTF index for softwood availability.Veneer, which is usually sliced to produce quarter cut material, is available from specialist sources.
Cedar of Lebanon in its solid form is durable and regarded as suitable for external joinery though availability should be checked. Columbian Pine for joinery can make a good combination with Cedar veneers.
USE AS TIMBER CUTS FEATURES
USE AS VENEER CUTS APPEARANCES
The wood makes a very attractive veneer, which is usually displayed quarter cut. In this form the figure is controlled but striking. When planning, availability should be investigated in the context of the size of the intended application and any requirement for matching.
